So I had a particularly odd dream last night that involved a prom. So I figured it had to be a sign to tell my prom story. Now if you'll recall my Taken to the Limit story you should read that one before you read this one.
I didn't go to Prom my Junior year I wasn't all that much into that type of thing, so when senior year rolled around I wasn't planning on going either. Then I was asked to be a date, I agreed, while I could take it or leave it she needed a guy and I could take her... That reads wrong, I was into the girl, even after the fiasco of our first two dates.
Let me back track I was damn suave when it came to dances and for someone with no actual lessons I can do most any slow dance and have some little bits of flare to throw in. I'll have to tell the story of Freshmen dance at some point.
So I rented my Tux, my mom (a florist) made the corsage, everything was set.
Three days before prom.
My phone rings ( I was styling and profiling with my Motorola Razr, that I still own(don't worry I don't use it))
"I found someone else I want to go with, so I'll be going with him instead" What?!? This was aggravating she wasn't the girl that I'd been pining for all of high school but she was at least second and well after not planning to go to prom then being asked I'd gotten into the idea. But now well screw that, right?
I called the Tux place and informed them I'd no longer need it, they actually let me have half my deposit back when they'd heard why (they kept trying to make me a better deal than a competitor they thought I'd got a deal from). Of course my mom, sold or tossed the corsage. And so I wasn't going...
At the time I worked for this little fast food chain called McDonalds. Now most of the Evening shift were high schoolers most Juniors and Seniors so they were all going to prom. I had the brilliant idea well I need to make up money from the Tux deposit I'll just go to work. I was banking on it being a dead shift due to everyone in town going to send people off to prom and waiting up to make sure there kids were alive after prom.
I was walking into work when the girl of my dreams walked out. The girl I'd been pursuing since Freshman year. Out she walked in a pretty amazing dress, with her boyfriend. I give a small wave of hello as they see me go by, her with a quizzical look on her face no doubt wondering what had happened, he however turns to me "Spiffy, you going to prom in that?"
The amount of rage that surged through me at that time. I bum rushed him in his tux, swinging flailing landing anything I could. Yup that's what I did in my head. I knew if I did that I'd not only be out a prom night, I'd be out of a job, and I'd lose not only one High School sweetheart but two. I shoved that fist which all three of us did notice into my pockets.
I walked inside. One of my managers came running up to me. "Why didn't you kick his ass" I explained how I thought I'd lose my job since we were all co-workers "For that pfft no, hell I'd have kicked his ass for you if I weren't twice his age" Shit.
So the night went on as expected we had nothing much to do. One of my other managers I believe she was 24 at the time took me out after work let me drive her 70s Mustang, got me drunk, we made out(I'd seen some handcuffs in her apartment but we never got to make use of those). It still made for a memorable night (and honestly I think that was her only intent). She explained the next night it was prom night and we don't talk about what happens on prom night. Maybe we don't talk about it but she made no mention of my blog 8D
To paraphrase a quote. It was the night I needed, but not the night I had wanted.
